Visit srd.sassa.gov.za online to apply for the unemployment social grant for relief of distress.
At the end of the page, please select your citizenship (‘South African ID Holders’ or ‘Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders’) by selecting the yellow button that says, ‘click here to proceed’.
On the next screen, under the ‘How do I apply for this SRD Grant‘ or the ‘Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders’ heading section, press on the yellow ‘click here to apply online’ button.
Then enter the following details on the next page to begin your online SRD grant application:
- Enter your mobile number
- Click “send SMS”
- Then enter the one-time pin that Sassa to authenticate and verify
- Finalize the appliction process and fill in all the information SASSA requires
Now you wait for a response and communications from SASSA while they are carefully processing your application details. This process will allow them to verify any of the submitted information and assess your grant eligibility.
Apply for the R370 SRD Grant Offline
To apply for the SRD (Social Relief of Distress) Grant offline in South Africa, please follow these simple steps:
- Visit a SASSA Office: Head to your nearest SASSA (South African Social Security Agency) office or a selected South African Post Office (SAPO) branch that processes SRD applications.
- Carry Required Documents:
- South African ID (or proof of ID for non-South African citizens with a valid permit).
- Proof of residence.
- Proof of income (if applicable).
- Complete the Application Form: At the SASSA office, request and fill in the SRD Grant application form. Ensure that all details are accurate.
- Submit the Application: Hand in your completed form along with the necessary supporting documents.
- Wait for Approval: SASSA will assess your application, and you will be notified of the outcome via SMS.

To apply for the SRD (Social Relief of Distress) Grant via WhatsApp, follow these steps:
- Save the SASSA WhatsApp Number: Save the official SASSA WhatsApp number: 082 046 8553.
- Start a Chat: Open WhatsApp and start a new chat with the saved number. Send a message saying “Hi” to initiate the process.
- Follow the Prompts:
- You will receive a response with several options. Select the option to apply for the SRD Grant.
- Provide the required information, including your personal details, ID number, and mobile number.
- Submit Your Application: Once you have filled in the necessary details, submit the application by following the remaining prompts.
- Confirmation: After submission, you will receive a confirmation message that your application has been received, and SASSA will review it.
Once approved, you will be notified via SMS about your application status and payment details.
