Since the extension of the SASSA SRD Grant to March 2025, qualified beneficiaries don’t need to re-apply for the grant.
SASSA said the grant will continue as normal, those who had already applied, don’t need to apply for the extended SRD grant, unless previously cancelled.
However, applications will be reconsidered every month, for eligibility and most importantly, to ensure you still qualify or need to benefit from the unemployment grant.
The government extended the SRD grant to continue financially supporting people who have no means of income and were negatively affected by the pandemic.

Could the Grant be Made Permanently?
A very important question with a lot of uncertainty.
Understandably, the SASSA SRD grant is most needed by those unemployed with no means of income in the country.
When the grant was initiated in 2021, it was meant to run for a full year however pandemic affected a lot of people so the government decided to extend this to 2022.
And in 2023, when the next period was supposed to end, they again saw the need for the grant as a relief for millions of South Africans. So it was extended again to March 2024.
When President C. Ramaphosa was asked whether the grant could be permanent, he said. “We are looking at how we move beyond the SRD grant. There have been calls for the basic income grant to be introduced which will support a number of people, and that is being considered,”
So you’ll be pleased to learn that the SRD grant has officially been extended until 2025 with the opportunity to be made permanent.
