Fraud has been one of SASSA’s biggest challenges, especially for the COVID-19 SRD Grant.
SASSA has now implemented a biometric verification process to improve the security of the SRD grant application and reduce the level of fraud that’s been happening.
Hopefully, the process of changing personal and banking details will be seamless now and more efficient.
Let’s dive right in.
How the SASSA Biometric Verification Works
SASSA’s biometric verification process uses your unique biological traits to confirm your identity.
These traits can include fingerprints, facial recognition, iris scans, voice recognition, and even DNA. The uniqueness of these biological characteristics makes biometric verification a highly secure method for identifying individuals.
When you want to change your grant cellphone or banking details, you will receive two SMSes to complete the process.
- SMS 1: Contains the link to update your personal and banking details
- SMS 2: Contains the link for the biometric verification process online
It’s a one-time activity and failure to complete the SASSA’s biometric verification will result in your grant getting suspended.
It’s such an important SASSA update to curb fraud and ensure payments are made to the correct beneficiary.

Benefits of A Biometric Verification System
- Enhanced Security: Biometric traits are unique to each individual, making it extremely difficult for unauthorized persons and fraudsters to replicate or forge.
- Convenience: Eliminates the need to remember passwords or carry identification cards. Users can simply use their biological traits to gain access.
- Speed and Efficiency: Biometric systems can quickly verify identities, streamlining processes in various settings like airports, banks, and workplaces.
- Reduced Fraud: Minimizes the risk of identity theft and fraudulent activities, as biometric traits are hard to duplicate.
- Improved User Experience: Provides a seamless and frictionless experience for users, enhancing satisfaction and trust.
- Regulatory Compliance: Helps organizations comply with security regulations and standards that require strong identity verification methods.
- Cost-Effective: Over time, the cost of managing and maintaining biometric systems can be lower than traditional methods, as it reduces the need for physical security measures and the reissuance of lost or stolen cards.
