Exciting news! SASSA Social Grants will see an increase next month, October 2024.
Every year, where government budgets allow, depending on some economic factors, SASSA increases the grants in April and October to assist beneficiaries financially.
Although not all grants are increased for various reasons, let’s see which ones will get the increase below.
Let’s get started.
2024 SASSA October Increase
Here are the SASSA grant increases for each type in October 2024.
- Old Age Grants (Ages 60-74): Beneficiaries in this category will get a R10 increase and receive R2,190 starting in October 2024. For this financial year, this grant received a total of R100 or 4.8% increase.
- Old Age Grants (Ages 75 and Older): Those aged 75 and above will see their grant increase by R10, making it R2,210 from R2,200 since April 2024.
- Disability Grants: This grant will rise by R10, bringing it to R2,190 per month.
- Child Care Dependency Grants: Beneficiaries under this category, which covers children with disabilities, will also see a R10 increase, bringing the monthly amount to R2,190.
- War Veterans Grant: This will increase by R10, reaching R2,190 in October.
SASSA is aiming to assist beneficiaries where possible in this trying times in South Africa.

These Grants Will Not Increase In October
As of October 2024, the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant of R370 will not receive an increase. This grant is primarily intended as temporary financial support for unemployed individuals affected by the pandemic, and it has been renewed and extended several times without any planned increase.
Most of the other permanent SASSA grants, such as the Old Age Pension, Disability Grant, and Child Support Grant, typically receive periodic increases, often announced during the government’s budget or mid-term reviews, but the SRD grant is an exception in terms of consistent adjustments.
Will the SRD Grant be permanent?
As of now, there has been no official confirmation that the SRD R370 grant will be made permanent. However, discussions within the South African government and civil society have raised the possibility of extending or converting the SRD grant into a more permanent form of social assistance.
Some policymakers and advocacy groups have pushed for a Basic Income Grant (BIG) to replace or supplement the SRD grant, particularly for unemployed and vulnerable individuals. The idea of making the SRD grant permanent is part of broader talks around providing ongoing financial support for South Africans who are unable to find employment.
While the SRD grant has been extended multiple times, including through 2025, its future beyond these extensions remains uncertain and will depend on government policy decisions, fiscal considerations, and public pressure.
Is it true that the Child Grant will be R1,100?
As of now, there has been no official announcement from the South African government or SASSA stating that the Child Support Grant will increase to R1,100. The current value of the Child Support Grant is R530 per month.
The posts circulating on social media are purely false and should be considered scams.
While there are ongoing discussions about increasing social grants to address inflation and poverty, any significant changes to the amount of the Child Support Grant would typically be announced in the annual budget speech by the Minister of Finance or during mid-year updates.
Keep an eye on official announcements from SASSA or the South African government for updates regarding any potential increases to the Child Support Grant.
