In light of this year’s budget speech by the finance minister, the SRD Grant has been extended by another year, until March 2026.
This is great news and quite a relief for millions of unemployed South Africans depending on the grant to get by.
Beneficiaries will be supported financially for another year, as part of the government trying to reduce the poverty level in the country.
The grant will continue in its current form, although there’s an ongoing court process where the National Treasury was ordered to reconsider its criteria for individuals to qualify for the SRD grant, specifically the account threshold of R624 in the bank.
You will continue to receive financial aid of R370 per month from the SRD Grant, should you still qualify since the restrictions might be tightened even further with the budget cut already implemented.
What Happens Next Year?
The grant will go into review again and the outcome will be determined by the findings of a review of active labour market programmes, which is expected to be completed by September 2025.
National Treasury indicated they’re increasing VAT in order to continue supporting the SRD grant for another financial year extension.
The goal is to eventually offer the grant permanently under the Basic Income Support grant. The Department of Social Development (DSD) confirmed consultations will continue with the goal to submit a draft policy to parliament in the next 2025/2026 financial year.
