How to Apply for the SASSA Child Support Grant 2026

by Admin | Jun 28, 2026 | Child Support Grant

Applying for the SASSA Child Support Grant has become significantly faster in 2026. SASSA introduced same-day approvals — if you arrive at a SASSA office with all the correct documents, your application can be processed and approved on the same visit. The previous three-month waiting period no longer applies to prepared applicants.

This guide walks you through exactly what to bring, what to expect on the day, and what happens after you apply.

New to the Child Support Grant? Read our complete Child Support Grant guide first to confirm you qualify before making the trip to a SASSA office.

Before You Apply — Confirm You Qualify

The Child Support Grant application can only be done in person at a SASSA office. Before you go, make sure you meet the basic criteria:

  • You are the primary caregiver of a child under 18
  • You are a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognised refugee
  • Your income is below the means test threshold — R52,800 per year (single) or R105,600 combined (married/partner)
  • Both you and the child live in South Africa
  • The child is not in a state institution

Documents Required

This is the most important section. Missing even one document means you cannot be processed on the day. Read carefully and check off everything before leaving home.

All Applicants Must Bring:

  • Your South African ID — the original bar-coded ID book or smart ID card (not a photocopy)
  • The child's birth certificate — original, with an ID number on it. If the child does not have a birth certificate yet, see the section below.
  • Your bank statement — 3 months, certified, not older than 3 months (to verify income for the means test)
  • Proof of income — payslips if employed; UIF blue book or discharge certificate from previous employer if unemployed
  • Proof of address — a utility bill, bank statement, or affidavit in your name, not older than 3 months

If You Are Married:

  • Your marriage certificate
  • Your spouse's ID
  • Your spouse's proof of income or proof of unemployment
  • Your combined bank statements

If You Are Divorced or Separated:

  • The court order confirming custody of the child
  • Proof of any maintenance you receive for the child (maintenance counts as income in the means test)

If You Are NOT the Biological Parent:

This applies to grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, and family friends caring for a child. You need proof that you are the primary caregiver — at least one of the following:

  • An affidavit from the biological parent confirming you are the primary carer
  • social worker's report confirming primary caregiver status
  • An affidavit from a police official
  • letter from the school principal confirming the child lives with you and you are responsible for their care
  • If parents are deceased: death certificates for both parents

If the Child Has No Birth Certificate:

SASSA can still process your application, but you must bring:

  • An affidavit (in standard SASSA format, completed in front of a Commissioner of Oaths who is not a SASSA official)
  • Proof that you have applied for a birth certificate at Home Affairs
  • sworn statement from a credible person (councillor, teacher, social worker, or religious leader) who knows you and the child

Where to Apply

Apply at your nearest SASSA office or service point. There is no online application for the Child Support Grant.

For addresses and contact numbers of SASSA offices near you, see our SASSA contact numbers by area guide or call the SASSA helpline on 0800 60 10 11.

Tips for your visit:

  • Arrive early — SASSA offices are busiest mid-morning. Arriving at opening time gives you the best chance of same-day processing.
  • Bring both originals and photocopies of all documents — some offices require certified copies, others accept originals. Having both prevents delays.
  • If you have young children, bring someone to help — SASSA offices can involve waiting even with the faster 2026 process.

What Happens on the Day

  1. Take a number at the reception or queue management desk and wait to be called
  2. Hand over your documents to the SASSA officer — they will review everything before starting your application
  3. Complete the application form with the assistance of the SASSA officer — they fill it in with you, you do not take it home
  4. Biometric verification — new applicants in 2026 are required to complete biometric identity verification. This involves a fingerprint scan or facial recognition at the branch. You cannot skip this step.
  5. Select your payment method — bank deposit, SASSA/Postbank card, or retail collection
  6. Receive your receipt — keep this. It is your proof of application and your reference number for following up

If all your documents are in order and biometric verification is completed, you can receive same-day approval under the 2026 process. Your first payment will be processed in the next available monthly batch.

How Much You Will Receive

SituationMonthly Amount
Standard Child Support GrantR580 per child
Top-up (non-parent primary caregiver of orphan)R580 + R290 = R870 per child

The amount applies per child. If you are the primary caregiver for three qualifying children, you receive R1,740 per month.

For a full breakdown of the amount, the top-up, and what the lifetime value of the grant means for your family, see our Child Support Grant amount guide.

When Will You Be Paid?

Child Support Grant payments are made on a fixed monthly schedule, unlike the SRD grant. Payments go out on the 4th of each month (or the nearest business day if the 4th falls on a weekend or public holiday).

See our Child Support Grant payment dates calendar for the full confirmed 2026/2027 schedule.

Your first payment after approval will be in the next monthly batch following your application. If your application is approved on 15 July, your first payment will be on or around 4 August.

After You Apply — What to Watch For

Check your application status. You can follow up at the SASSA office where you applied, or call 0800 60 10 11 with your receipt reference number.

Keep your contact details updated. SASSA communicates with you via the cellphone number you register. If you change numbers, update it at your SASSA office immediately to avoid missing payment notifications.

Annual life certificate. If your grant is paid through a bank, institution, or procurator (someone collecting on your behalf), SASSA requires you to complete a life certificate at a SASSA office once a year to confirm the child is still in your care. Missing this can result in suspension.

Grant reviews. SASSA can review your grant at any time if they believe your circumstances may have changed. You will receive three months' notice before a scheduled review. Cooperate fully — failure to respond to a review request can result in suspension.

If Your Application Is Declined

You have the right to appeal any declined Child Support Grant application. A decline is not permanent.

Step 1: Ask SASSA for the specific reason in writing.

Step 2: Within 90 days of the decline, submit an appeal at the same SASSA office or contact the SASSA call centre.

Step 3: If your appeal is unsuccessful at SASSA level, you can escalate to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) — this is free and does not require a lawyer.

Common reasons for decline and how to address them:

  • Income above the means test — if your income fluctuates, bring supporting documents showing your average monthly income
  • Missing documents — gather the outstanding items and reapply immediately
  • Child not living with you — provide stronger evidence of primary caregiver status such as a school letter or social worker report
  • Child already receiving another grant — a child cannot receive more than one grant at the same time

See our Child Support Grant appeal guide for the full step-by-step appeal process and what documents to include.

Black Sash offers free paralegal assistance to caregivers navigating declined grant applications and appeals. They operate nationally and can assist you at no cost.

Protecting Your Grant From Fraud

Once your grant is approved, protect it:

  • Never share your banking PIN, OTP, or ID number with anyone claiming to be from SASSA
  • SASSA will never call or SMS you asking for payment to process or speed up your grant
  • Only update your banking details in person at a SASSA office or through the official SASSA portal
  • If you suspect your grant has been redirected or stolen, call 0800 60 10 11 immediately

See our guide on how to protect your SASSA grant from fraud and scams for the full list of red flags to watch for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply if I don't have a bank account? Yes. You can select a SASSA pay point or retail collection as your payment method. However, a bank account is safer and more convenient. TymeBank and Capitec both offer accounts with no monthly fees that work well for grant recipients.

Can I apply for multiple children at the same time? Yes. You can apply for all qualifying children in your care at the same appointment. Bring a separate birth certificate for each child.

Can a father apply even if the mother is in the picture? Yes — only one caregiver can receive the grant per child, and it goes to whoever is the primary caregiver. If the father is mainly responsible for the child's care, he is the correct applicant.

My child was born outside South Africa — can I still apply? The child must be a South African citizen or permanent resident and must currently live in South Africa. If those conditions are met, place of birth is not a disqualifying factor.

What if the child's birth certificate shows the wrong father? This does not affect your eligibility as the primary caregiver. Apply based on your relationship to the child, not the information on the birth certificate.

I applied months ago and haven't heard anything. What do I do? Call 0800 60 10 11 with your receipt reference number, or visit the office where you applied. With the 2026 same-day approval process, extended delays are less common — but follow up promptly if you have not heard within 4 weeks.
