Waiting to hear back on your SASSA SRD R370 appeal is stressful — especially when your income depends on it.
This guide shows you exactly how to check your appeal status online right now, explains what every status message means, and tells you what to do next depending on the outcome.
Not yet submitted an appeal? Read our step-by-step guide on how to lodge an SRD R370 grant appeal before continuing here.
What You Need Before You Check
You only need two things:
- Your 13-digit South African ID number
- The cellphone number registered on your SRD grant application
No OTP or additional verification is required just to view your appeal status.
If you no longer have access to your registered number, see our guide on how to change your SRD cellphone number first — you must fix the number issue before you can access your appeal.
How to Check Your SRD Appeal Status Online (2026)
- Go to the official SRD appeals portal: srd.sassa.gov.za/appeal
- Enter your 13-digit ID number
- Enter the cellphone number you used when you applied
- Click Submit
- Your current appeal status will appear on screen
Important: Only use the official SASSA website at srd.sassa.gov.za. Fake sites that look similar are used by scammers to steal your personal details. See our guide on SASSA SRD scams to avoid if you're unsure whether a site is legitimate.

Pending
Your appeal has been received and is still being reviewed by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). This is normal — the ITSAA can take up to 90 days to issue a decision. No action is needed from you yet.
Under Review / In Progress
The ITSAA is actively assessing your case. They may be cross-checking your bank records, SARS data, or UIF information against the reason your original application was declined. Continue checking weekly.
Approved
Your appeal was successful. SASSA is required to pay you back-pay for every month your grant was incorrectly declined. The payment will be processed in the next available batch — check your SRD payment dates to estimate when this will arrive.
Declined
The ITSAA reviewed your case and confirmed the original decision. A reason will be shown on screen. This decision is final for that specific month. However, you can still apply in the next cycle if your circumstances qualify — each month is assessed independently.
Cancelled
Your appeal was cancelled, either by you or because it was submitted outside the 90-day window. A new appeal cannot be lodged for that month.
Duplicate Application
More than one appeal was submitted for the same ID number and month. Only the first submission is processed; duplicates are automatically cancelled.
The 2026 SRD Appeal Process — Step by Step
If your SRD R370 grant was declined and you believe the decision is wrong, here is how the appeal process works in 2026:
Step 1 — Request a Reconsideration (within 30 days) Go to srd.sassa.gov.za, open your status page for the declined month, and click "Request Reconsideration". This is the first step and must be done within 30 days of the decline notice.
Step 2 — Wait for the Reconsideration Outcome SASSA will review your reconsideration and respond. If it is approved at this stage, your back-payment will be processed in the next batch. If it is declined again, proceed to Step 3.
Step 3 — Lodge a Formal Appeal with ITSAA (within 90 days) If your reconsideration is denied, you have 90 days from the original decline date to submit a formal appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/appeal to submit. This process is completely free and you do not need a lawyer. The Department of Social Development's ITSAA information page has further background on the tribunal.
Step 4 — Wait for the ITSAA Decision The ITSAA typically issues decisions within 60 to 90 days. You will be notified by SMS. If your appeal is successful, SASSA must pay back-pay for all affected months.
Tip: When submitting your appeal, include supporting documents that address the specific reason for your decline. If the reason was "Alternative income source identified," attach a bank statement and a short written explanation of what that deposit was. Black Sash offers free advice and paralegal support to SRD beneficiaries navigating the appeal process.
Common Reasons for SRD Grant Declines in 2026
Understanding why your grant was declined helps you appeal more effectively. For the full breakdown of every status and what causes it, read our complete SRD statuses guide.
- Alternative income source identified — A bank deposit pushed your account above R624 in that month. Even a once-off transfer from a family member counts. Explain this in your appeal with bank statements.
- Identity verification failed — Your ID details don't match Home Affairs records. See our guide on fixing the Identity Verification Failed status and our separate guide on completing the SASSA ID verification request.
- UIF or NSFAS registered — The system detected an active UIF or NSFAS registration. If this is incorrect, provide supporting documents showing you are not receiving these benefits.
- Other SASSA grant detected — If you already receive another SASSA grant (Old Age, Child Support, Disability), you do not qualify for the SRD. Read about all SASSA grant types to understand how they interact.
- Means test failed — Your income, as detected through bank sweeps and SARS data, exceeded R624 that month.
Important: The 90-Day Appeal Deadline
You have 90 days from the date of the decline to submit your appeal to the ITSAA. Miss this window and you cannot appeal that specific month. Do not delay.
If you are unsure of the decline date, check your SRD status page at srd.sassa.gov.za — the date appears next to each monthly outcome.

Decision Information
We have put together a step-by-step guide on how to lodge your R370 grant appeal, should your application get declined due to incorrect information.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I appeal every month separately? Yes. Each month is assessed and can be appealed independently. A decline in March 2026 must be appealed separately from a decline in April 2026.
What if my appeal takes longer than 90 days to be decided? The 90-day window refers to when you must submit the appeal, not when it must be decided. Once submitted within the window, ITSAA will still process it even if the decision comes later.
Does an appeal affect my current month's application? No. Your monthly eligibility assessment continues independently of any pending appeal. You can be approved for June 2026 while an appeal for March 2026 is still pending.
Do I need to reapply while waiting for my appeal? No. Your active SRD application stays open. SASSA reassesses your eligibility every month automatically. If you need to reapply from scratch, see our SRD application methods guide.
If my appeal is successful, when will I be paid? SASSA must process back-pay for all successfully appealed months. Check our SASSA payment dates page for the current month's payment schedule.
I'm approved but haven't been paid — is that a different issue? Yes. Being approved but unpaid is a separate issue from an appeal. Read our guide on SRD approved but not paid for specific steps.
